About

IAI Sports is a new platform for sports journalism and analytics. The name (if you haven’t worked it out) is an acronym of the three values we stand by in reporting and conducting sports analysis:

  • Impartial:  Treating all rivals or disputants equally.
  • Analytical:  Relating to or using analysis or logical reasoning.
  • Informative:  Providing useful or interesting information.

These three values are integral to the decision of building this brand to discuss and analyse the National Basketball Association (NBA). It stems from the chaos that is the media coverage of the NBA, where there is little-to-no accountability for those that don’t think before they speak. They clog the headlines with random “hot takes”; people with high levels of publicity, speaking without any logical thought or reasoning behind them, in order to get as many clicks or views as possible.

It then allows people on social media to create narratives on certain NBA players, ultimately ruining a player’s reputation and standing in the public eye. For example, Russell Westbrook in 2021, with the Washington Wizards, averaged a triple-double for the fourth time in his career, crazy considering only 1 player in NBA history had achieved this feat previously. In one season with the LA Lakers, Westbrook’s legacy has been diminished and ruined because a player of his skillset didn’t fit in to the team dynamic.

This has to change. For someone to make the NBA is a huge accomplishment, something we should be celebrating – not criticising. For someone like Westbrook to create statistical history and to be ridiculed one season later, it’s just not right. For someone like Rudy Gobert, one of the best defensive players the NBA has seen, to be disrespected because he can’t shoot and average 12.4 points for his career, it’s just not right. There are so many examples where a player’s career has been impacted due to a narrative on social media or from the NBA media.

There is a way where the media and fans on social media can critique a player using logic and reasoning – rather than diminishing their career and everything they have done previously. That’s where IAI Sports comes in. We intend to report and analyse the NBA using data and analytics, combined with the takes and reporting from those in the media that follow the three key values. Our purpose is to give the average basketball fan a true understanding and appreciation of the best basketball league in the world.

We’re not going to be perfect straight away. There’s plenty we want to do to improve. And there’s so much we can and will learn from this great game. Be a part of the conversation on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. And enjoy the game of basketball for what it is.
